kidenere

kidenere: maps the links in the physical, social and symbolic contexts of chains—interconnecting lives.

In late 2023 I received a kidney in the ANZKX paired kidney exchange program at Royal Melbourne Hospital, in exchange my partner donated a kidney to extend a stranger’s life. Paired kidney donor chains can create opportunities for endless recipient-donor pairings, those in need and those able of body to give. Our lives paused, as we went through this process and life changing moment.

The 2023 graduating students from Melbourne Polytechnic collectively made this precious chain —a ring made by each student, carefully linked and soldered together— gifted to me after my recovery. An overwhelming gesture of kindness and care, a memento of these bright emerging makers, each ring an embodiment of creative individual, yet linked to form a whole wearable piece.

My response is a chain in silver, to reflect our paired chain of kidneys, roller printed with gauze. A chain of thanks for the kindness, care, love and support, by so many people, in so many ways.
